As described above ama and vata are the main causes, so efforts should be made to digest ama and to reduce the vata. The digestion should be improved so that no further ama is produced. Efforts should be made to relieve the pain and inflammation. This is the line of treatment according to Ayurveda. Fasting is very beneficial for digesting the ama. The fasting be complete or partial depending on the strength of the person, season and place. Two tea spoons of lemon juice mixed in 250 ml. of warm water and a tea spoon of honey is good to take twice a day -morning and evening. body massage with sesame or mustard oil helps to reduce the vata and thus reduce the pain. The joints affected by pain can be massaged for longer time. Light exercise is useful but you must know your limits: as a general rule if any exercise, including walking, causes pain after one hour, you have crossed your limit. Liberal intake of orange juice or sweet limejuice or Vitamin C enhances the efficacy of any anti rheumatic drug, since Vitamin C can reduce skeletal pain. Guggul is a very helpful herb for curing arthritis. If available it can be taken in one to 3 gm dose twice a day after meals with warm water. Contra-indications: Not recommended for people with kidney disease or acute rashes.

At Aryavishwa Ayurved, we specialize in the offering individualized treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis and have had very high success rate at achieving and maintaining remission and good functionality in patients suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis without the need for steroids, disease modifying drugs or biological agents like TNF alpha blockers. This is very much possible in patients who come to us in the initial stages itself. Even others who are in the chronic condition of the disease respond to our treatment but it is not uniform in all cases. In some such cases where the disease is very severe, patients are advised to continue modern medication along with our Ayurvedic treatment, till they get into a good remission and gradually the drugs are withdrawn and they are maintained on Ayurvedic treatment alone. In very rare cases, we do advise patients to continue some Modern medicine as well as is it very critical to keep the disease process under check failing which the joints are damaged irreparably.
The patient would be examined by the doctor and the oil to be used would be prescribed. The oil would be slightly heated. A clean cloth bundle would be kept ready. The patient would be made to lie down in a wooden container which is the size of the average human body. The bundle of cloth would be dipped into the heated oil and then squeezed slowly. Then the experienced masseur would knead the bundle all over the body of the patient. It would be done slowly so that the oil may spread equally with the same amount of heat and then briskly. The patients head should not sweat during this pizhicil treatment. This Pizhicil / Squeezing treatment would generally lasts for a period of 7 to 21 days for about 60 to 90 minutes per day. The patient is guided to follow a certain routine for these days to obtain maximum benefit from the pizhicil treatment. This Pizhicil treatment is very useful for rheumatic diseases like arthritis, paralysis, hemiplegia, paralysis , sexual weakness, nervous weakness and nervous disorders etc.
There is a good Ayurvedic approach for treating Arthritis. Any ayurvedic treatment for arthritis is based on understanding the Tri - doshas of our body. As we all know, to have a healthy body all the three doshas need to be balanced and hence if any doshas are imbalanced it leads to disease/disorders. According to Ayurveda, Arthritis is a condition whch is caused due to aggravated Vatadosha. The body produces Ama which is a toxin that is released due to indigestion. When Ama is produced, it gets circulated throughout the body and gets deposited at the sites which are already weak. When Vata increases, Ama finds a perfect place to scale up. Due to this we experience severe pain in fingers/knees. Thus there are restricted movements of knees and there is dependency on others even for day to day chores.
There are some modern techniques and treatments for Arthritis where medications are prescribed; analgesics are given for pain, steroids for controlling inflammation. Even in few cases, surgeries are advised for joint replacement. But all these methods cannot cure Arthritis completely and it also has many side effects. Thus ayurvedic treatment goes to the root cause and cures arthritis as it is non - invasive treatment with zero side effects.
